I have everything but my CPU and gpu, thinking about 8320 and 2 7870's

The 7870s would work but personally I would get something lika e a 7970 or a 280x instead. AMD X-fire configs are known to run very hot and don't have as many games that support it as nVidia, so if youre going for the dual card approach, Id recommend nVidia. If you're aiming for AMD because of mantle, I would definitely recommend a card in the r9 series. The 7870s should run the game fine but getting a better card can squeeze more juice out of it so if you're willing to put down another $100 I'd say aim for a 290 or a 290x for another $100 on top of that

Since the game is far off from release you might consider a low budget on your GPU's and upgrade once it is released and we have a better feel for the recommended hardware. A year to Two years is a lifetime in computer hardware age.

While you are right, they wont be upping the graphics from this point. The game looks like what they want and current rigs like what he posted can handle it, all that is needed now is optimizations for the game along with the building of the universe.

EDIT: It's also not an upgrade for SC alone, he is upgrading with SC in mind but also other games like BF4

@1800XRay What role do you want to fulfill? I would go talk in TS with the Councilman who will be running your sub div of choice (trade, military, exploration)

The game may look presentation wise what they want it to look like but they may still add ships with higher poly counts, up the texture res, rebuild ships to give them higher polys and design / model new planets, locations etc. that are far beyond the complexity we've seen so far. The best time to buy a graphics card for a game is the week after the game comes out.

Chris Robert announced the specs himself. For alpha, a 660TI/7870 will be able to hold the game, 780/290x for maxed, 770/680/280x for high. These are all for 1080p. Given the fact that people are having some issues holding 60 frames in the hangar on their recommended settings, it tells that the game will have to be optimized more meaning less polygons, not more.

Optimizing a game means equalizing performance statistics across a variety of different hardware configurations. Not lowering poly counts. High poly counts has been one of their main talking points when it comes to SC.

They already found what will give good performance across the variety of different configs, hence why they announce min/req specs. While yes, they do have high poly counts as their big thing, they will probably have to lower it seeing as, people aren't getting good frames in the hangar(Sound familiar?). Imagine those frames then imagine it 100 times worse because there will be fights involving massive armadas of ships going at it. That will fuck rigs up more than anything. People want to play the game and have a good looking game, not play the game with shitty frames and horrible textures because they have to lower their setting all the way down.

If you want to be able to run the game, get a card now. If you want to be able to play the game via the developers and creators vision then wait 2 years.
