Windows 8 is an improved Kernel. I think the UI sucks out the ass, but there's a couple of ways to get your start menu back and have it boot to a regular desktop with a small amount of effort.

With that said, Tom's Hardware did some rather extensive testing on specific games. I'd read up:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-8-gaming-performance,3331-13.html

Battlefield 3 is on the list of games they tested while PS2 is not.

I heard people who run Windows 8 have at LEAST 10-20 FPS increase and do not have as many random lock up/disconnects. I did a little bit of research on this.... but in the end I still prefer Windows 7 because I grew up with the operating system and I know where to find everything heh.

Stick with 7 then. Either way, you're going to have a good comp with good gaming capabilities. I wouldn't say either is better for what you're trying to do, but Win 8 IS designed with the tablet in mind, so ease of use says stick to what you know. Otherwise you will have to go through an inevitable transition where you figure out your new OS's capabilities. Overall I'd still say 8 IS an upgrade, but the upgrades, although numerous, are hard to identify off the bat. Initially everything just looks confusing and you want your old OS back. Gratz on your new build! =)

Somehow I suspect it's the exact same gain as disabling all those Win7 crap as Aero. Kill everything which makes your PC slower than it should be and Win7 is the best call. Well, I prefer 98SE, but somehow I guess PS2 won't run on that... It also has an issue with NTFS and higher amounts of RAM, so don't listen to dinosaurs like me!

I've run windows 8 on both my work and home PCs for about 8 months now, and I think it is great. Only a small part of the OS (windows RT apps) are touch oriented. the rest of the OS is very similar to 7. It has a very easy learning curve IMO.

Yea I'm with Shadoom, I picked up windows 8 at launch and it was a little disorienting for a few days but I can't go back. It so fast, rock solid stable and the new Task Manager alone is with the cheaper price tag.

Thank you all for your timely responses!! Win7 it is!!! If I want to upgrade to Win8 down the road I will do so, but since Windows 8 Blue is just around the corner, I might just upgrade my Windows 7 to that when it drops. (or soon after. You know how windows launches are.)

Windows Blue is just service pack 1 for windows 8. So it's windows 8.1, rumor has it that it will be a free upgrade for existing users.

I was planning on upgrading my rig back in January, but my computer guy suggested waiting for something coming out this summer. He thinks I should change to windows 8, but his is a bit partial to microsoft, although he can get me a discount through his connections.
