I've got a Logitech Extreme 3DPro and get pissed every single time I fire it up. The mouse/kbd always seem to be a better setup. I've tried a few different setup files from the WT forums, but always do better with mouse/kbd.

If I stick with it, is there a point where it will improve my game or is not superior to kbd/mouse in realistic battles at all?

I think FRB is too hardcore for me, so not really interested in going down that road anytime soon.

I just boughtt myself last week a Saitek x52 and the rudder pedals, had always used m/kbd for everything. It just takes a lot of getting used to, it's definitely more fun but it takes a lot of getting the hang of. Been using it for a week straight and feel I still have a long way to go with it and tweaking, but it gets a lot better each day. Did my first FRBs yesterday, they're fun. Extremely challenging, but fun.

I do, I mostly fly with sticks when I'm not in arcade.
I used to try stick in arcade mode in 1.33, only to be clubbed to death...

If you are not flying in Sim battles then there really is no reason to fly with a joystick other than immersion. Granted, when you set your controls for K&B then you will always have that annoying "flight instructor" directing you how to fly. I use that exact same joystick and I fly exclusively sims and have not had any problems with it.

I'm still waiting for a better joystick to appear on the market... I've got a 13 years old MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2, and there is not a single joystick that can outperform this one :) I do want to replace it for something with more buttons and a dual throttle, but I don't want to loose force feedback. Feeling the stall approaching in your stick is just so good :) And the faster you fly, the more force is required to change directions. Great for immersion and precision during high speed chases.

You should try flying with some friends, its a lot more fun, plus we can teach you a thing or two, may be make it a lil easier for you :)

I think I need a stick that resembles Airbus one. My current stick is quite weird in term of control mechanism and throttle leaver is in a totally inconvenient position. /headbang
