Mouse & Keyboard is perfectly playable, me and Trux are the main mouse and keyboard users and we don't have any problems. As Beachy said, for exploration and trading you really don't need a joystick setup, for combat I'm not sure, in my experience after spending some time tweaking the mouse & keyboard settings so it feels right I have no problems in combat and think I do "alright". That said I haven't tried it with a joystick yet so can't give you an accurate comparison.

P.S My biggest pet hate with the mouse & keyboard controls is relative mouse control where it keeps centering your mouse, turn this off asap as it makes combat a lot easier and turn on the direction indicator, that way you only have to move you mouse in a direction to keep turning that way and you can always see exactly which direction your turning.

I Fly a Saitek x52 Pro HOTAS setup now, but I started the game flying mouse and keyboard. Flying mouse and keyboard is completely feasible. When I started I had no joystick and no TrackIR, those two items are staples in the game. Flying mouse and keyboard allows you to add a fee look button and use the mouse to look around, which is big part of this game and how you access your in ship menus (these are also assignable to buttons). You will utilize these menus constantly. I will say though if it is available to you, flying a joystick adds so much to this game. My X52 has every single button mapped and I spent about a week fine tuning everything. Playing with both I would recommend joystick if it is an option if not mouse and keyboard works just fine.

Beachy touched on the flight system in the game as opposed to Star Citizen. The place this is going to be the most apparently is PVP dogfighting. The game has the option of turning off Flight Assist. When you do your ships thrusters don’t auto stabilize the ship. This allows for maneuvers in dogfighting that can make all the different in duels. Also currently the AI is prone to ramming, which is a major pain the ass because a small federal fighter can ram you in a boost and blow up your ship out of nowhere. I have found in an intense dog fight avoiding a ship trying to ram you is easier with a joystick.

Elite Dangerous has taken some flack for how they have adjusted the game mechanics especially since the first Alpha. They will defend these changes by explaining they want to try to make a game people want to play. This means balancing out the single and multiplayer experience and supporting many different rigs. Also Frontier Development has built this game from the ground up including their own physics engine. They have complete autonomy in how they choose to build and design this game. That is one of the things I love about it. They are very open to player input from their Beta testers and seem very intentional about what they implement.

Also on another side note many people have voiced struggling with the price tag on this game. I was a console player for a long time before moving to PC, and am used to spending $60 for every game even if it is absolute crap. So when a game releases with a price tag like $50.00 that doesn’t throw me. And if that means my money is supporting a company that I as a gamer believe in, I am all the more ready to pay them for my experience.

A lot of people on PC now have gotten used to free 2 play. FUCK F2P MAN! Its eroded the need for devs to make a playable game with content in to at launch instead now you get nickled and dimed to death.

Edit: After digging a little it looks like the ACE Combat 6 Stick and Throttle will work, though some people said the pc will see it as a 360 controller. But hey, as long as it works and I can still use the keyboard as input it saves me from having to buy another joy stick.

I like free to play games, and sometimes they are done well, but sometimes they they rely on in game transactions too much, it varies. I actually write a blog about casual gaming and focus a lot on free to play cos people don't have a lot of money, but if a game pops up which is worth the price then I'll recommend that too.

Elite: Dangerous is one such game, its a breath of freash air and I really like the dev team behind it. If people aren't already you should sign up to the ED newsletter, comes every Friday and tells you about hip and coming features etc. For instance from last week and this week we now know that the ability to own multiple ships and the ability to mine asteroids for minerals will be in the next patch at the end of the month :)

Just a couple updates for people as we wait for Beta 3:

    1. Its been announced that the wipe for Beta 3 will clear everything except your wealth. So you will get to keep all of your CR including the value of your ship. I am not sure about cargo so you may want to have an empty hold to be safe.

    2. For those using Nvidia cards in SLI, it now works. I tested my FPS uncapped right outside Change and went from 130 on one card to 170 with both.

    3. The final thing is also for Nvidia users but not specific to ED is the new DSR settings. It essentially renders the game at a higher resolution and downscales it to whatever your monitor is. I only tested this for about 5 min but it is very impressive. I decided to follow the logic of go big or go home and went straight for 4k rendering. I was getting around 80 fps outside of Chango but once I went into the docking bay 4k absolutely crushed my cards(2xGTX780's) and was only getting about 30fps. But I will say the game looked even better, not a jagged edge in sight. I plan on doing some more testing with this over the weekend and I'll try and post some comparison shots.

So grinding the space truckin won't be a waste of time for Beta 3.

I'm wondering too what doubling my GTX 660s will do. I get around 60 fps with one.

I'm guessing it would jump to the to the 80-90 range depending on what settings you are using and where you are in game. Honestly the place it will help most is inside of space stations. Like I said in my previous post I was rendering at 4k and getting fps in the 80's out in space, and soon as I entered the station it was a whole different story.

Good update :) so best thing to do is on the 29th downgrade yourself back to a sidewinder and sell all your worldly possessions, cool.

Was thinking guys, maybe only temporarily as the space is expanding, but should we assign a particular system as a base of operations? Might not have many practical advantages (maybe more once we can store ships) but from a squadron perspective its more structured if we have a home base.

You don't even have to go back to a sidewinder, they will include the value of your current ship and its upgrades. Cargo is the only thing I am not sure of so I will personally be selling all of it before the update.

Picking a home starport may be a decent idea that we can look into and it has been confirmed that you will be able to own multiple ships in Beta 3, the big question will be cost of storing the ones you aren't using.

I know that if the Imperials are added in Beta 3 Ernst, Truxaw, and I plan to head that way as fast as possible.

And hopefully we will know more of what to expect when the newsletter is released later today.

Even better :) nice info beachy! I'll follow you guys, think I'm gonna stick to trading or bounty hunting to build up my fortune before straying into exploration, I want to do it properly with decent equipment and an Asp, and for that I need cash. Besides, I've fallen in love with my upgraded Eagle :)

As usually I'm eagerly awaiting the newsletter later today :) do we think they will finally announce fuel scoops officially?
