Over the last couple of weeks our Bf4 Division has been growing ever larger. I have noticed that when we enter a server we tend to change the dynamic of that server with our tenacious game play.I must admit after last night being told after a 400 point come back.."You guys suck"...I teared up a bit! Nice job Gentlemen the mark of a great gamer is that other people notice your abilities!

Maybe it might be time for us to look into a server again, any voluteers?

Our own server would be awesome but we really need lots of admins on throughout the day. I remember at the beginning of BF4 sitting in an empty server while at the office trying to seed the stupid thing. If we got enough admins or even just NNG players to hop in throughout the day to keep it going then it would be a solid thing.

One thing that my TF2 community did was that every night there was always a person who would start the server up... And that usually means sending mass invites to everyone who plays on the server.

I don't know if that works in BF4's system though, so just a thought.

#1 Lurker NA here. I feel really compelled to respond to this thread though since a lot of money and heartache went into the BF3 server back in the day especially toward the end.

A few key things to remember when thinking about renting a server. Since DICE has introduced a new type of server in BF4 it really changed the landscape of what servers are full all the time and which ones sit empty 75% of the time.

So the 2 types of servers, as you may or may not know, are as follows:
Official Servers” only allow access to a few server settings which are very restricted. Server admins cannot kick or switch players around. Missions can only be tracked here. Awards, scores and unlocks will also be recorded. Players land on these types of servers when using Quick Match.

Ranked Servers” are servers that allow mixed game modes and are more flexible with setting ranges. Server admins are allowed to kick and switch players around as well as change ticket totals. Ranked Servers record awards, scores and unlocks. Players will be unable to Quick Match into Ranked Servers, but they can find them via the Server Browser.

The important difference in these servers are anyone who uses the “Quick Match” button will be put into an official server ONLY. The quick match feature never places a player in a ranked server. (I used to not believe in the power of the quick match button, however I currently only play in "Official, normal" servers and I have seen servers loose 15+ players in a round and as soon as the next round starts its fully loaded again.) The plus to that feature? Running an Official server is the easy way to run a server and get it populated quickly. 2-3 players and within 10 mins you could have a fully hopping 64 man server. You also never need active admins! Since you can make no fancy rules there is no need for them! Downside to Official? You pretty much have to give up all the freedoms you would potentially want in being an admin and having your own server.

Now yes you can run a Ranked server however with the recent R45 server update you cannot run adaptive player slots, or idle seed a server. So unless you have a large community with lots of people (and I mean like 10-15 people) willing to get in the server and “fuck around” for 10, 15, even 20 minutes it will never even show up in the server browser. And you are further screwed because you wont be getting players from quick match.

TLDR: Don’t waste your money at this point in the games life. Just pub and save yourself a lot of money.

I do know what a huge pain it is to try to seed...I have spent hours running around all alone just being bored (because of idle kick). We would finally get 4-5 (and occasionally 10-15) people in for a round, but the round would end and then we would be empty again. You might once a month get a full server running for a bit but then overnight it dies. Plus to get highly ranked on servers you need to be consistently filled. I am actually okay with Pub stomping. I'm not against adminning (I miss the days of booting racist/bigot/just plain stupid folk) but it also takes a toll on the joy of gaming.

Not saying we can't, I just know the frustration Boone had with the cost vs. usage. Let's save the money from the server and buy me a pair of Turtle Beach bluetooth head phones...or something else.

I really like the idea of having our own server. Well... no, scratch that, I like the idea of having our own place to get together and play. Not so much a fan of all the extra baggage that comes along with the server.

Lot's of advantages and disadvantages to having our own server, but in most cases the headaches outweigh the fun when i sit down and think about it.

    - Being able to admin the server they way we want, awesome. The flood of drama and bickering I can see from setting up the rules (oh god I can just see the "that's not what NNG stands for" posts) no... just no.

-Having admin powers, Weeeee I can boot that prick! In reality it's more like godamnit I have to stop what i'm doing to go take care of this prick.

-Having our own "Home" this is the thing that I really want. BUT, while yes we do have a pretty good number of people that show up in the evening, we have no where near enough to keep the server going through the day.

-So we only have the server rolling in the evening when we are all there. If I only get to play for an hour in the evening i really don't want to spend half that time seeding the server and i'll likely piss people off when i'm off shooting people on a NODA sever instead of "helping out" the NNG server.

I have been having a blast lately with the larger group of us playing, a squad or two playing "tactically" and communicating can absolutely change the flow of a game. but i don't think we need a server to do that, my vote is to just keep doing what we are doing and enjoy it.

If you guys are friends with other clans of similar size who are having difficulty seeding their own server, ask for limited admin powers for your officers and play together with them.

As Biz said, getting a server full is a real chore. Nay, it's a pain in the fucking balls.

With BF4 myself and many others sat in our empty server for what probably totalled up to weeks of our lives just to try to get it populated. And ultimately failed. And that was when we had an official division and tons of members. So instead of playing and kicking ass you'll be running around an empty server together trying to get people to join. Having done this for years I can tell you it's very frustrating.

I don't mean to discourage steps that lead towards growth or progression, I'm just trying to save you the hassle. Because I've lived it. Instead of using those precious gaming hours to devour the souls of pubber noobs, you'll be spinning your thumbs. Or my favorite past time, using an Abrams to knock over every tree on the map waiting for people to join.

Factor in getting everything up and running, testing, configuring procon, plugins, admin lists, etc and you're talking about a good chunk of work. Do a search on these forums for server seeding and see the pain we'd gone through in the past.

When BF5 rolls around? Then definitely!

The bigger communities with rock solid reputation and high turnout have already claimed their stake in the bf4 server market and the people who play on their servers aren't adding anything new to their favorites list.

Agreed. It's pretty awesome logging in and seeing all these cool dudes we've got playing now. You can pretty much count on some hilarious shit going down on a nightly basis. Good stuff.

like c4'ing a chopper in mid air, or watching someone accuse our local Pastor of hacking....heheh that was so funny. I see the downside and Nraged has a goo idea if we want to pursue that direction. BUt as it stands when we come into a server people stop and say the follow..." Whats up NNg" or " fuck im leaving this server these guys kick my ass everytime" either way Im having a fricking blast!
