I heard that some guy lost a ship that cost in excess of $1,500...Yeah...that's more than a hobby. Boy is HIS mom going to be pissed =-)

"The Battle of B-R5RB" is what it says. I dunno anything about EVE though so I have no idea anything about Crimea.

I really hope Star Citizen is not nearly as complex as EVE sounds like it is. I want it to have some complexity yes, but not on quite that scale. Then again I guess it's only as complex as you allow it to be for yourself.

Some people were talking in the comments about it taking 6 months real time to learn to pilot some of those larger ships. That's not including the time and resources it takes to make or acquire one. I don't know if they literally mean 6 months played time or if you can accomplish it in a 6 month span of time, several hours a week.

Now a nearly 24 hour, epicly huge battle like that would be pretty cool. Though I think Star Citizen is going to be a little more fast paced than to drag it out that long. Even though I understand it went on this long because of time dilation.

@Sixten to fly the bigger ships you basically need to put skills in a queue (not grinding like in most other games). Each skill takes a certain period of time to train e.g. 40mins/8hours/3days/17days and so on. Higher the particular level for a certain skill say, "evasive maneuvering", the longer it takes to train (max lvl per skill is 5). You can have certain neural implants in your brain which improve your learning times for the various skills. So when they say 6 months, they mean they have made characters specifically to train for that one ship and have power leveled in a way, basically trained nothing but what is required to fly a certain large ship (They log in every few days to update the skill queue for 6+ months). Their main character will much likely have more Skill points overall in a much broader arc and be able to fly and use a lot more ships/weaponry/other spaceshipythings.

I should mention the "$300,000" that was lost is slightly wrong. It basically means that the real life equivalent of that was lost. Large corps are able to make lots of in-game money to cover the cost of buying their members large ships. There are quite a few people though who will buy their own stuff, so whilst the REAL LIFE figure won't be near that much, it will still be quite high. It is also amazinnggg PR for EVE and when stuff like that happens lots of people join up to the game.

To be honest, EVE just has a SUPER steep learning curve, more than any other game I've played. Once you have played a while, it's easy and lots of fun. I quit once when I first started out, because whilst the game was so cool to play, I just had no idea what I was doing and where I was. Then I found a group of players called RvB (RedvsBlue). They are one of the biggest corporations in the game at 7000 players (and the biggest in High-sec, which is the safer area). It is 2 corps (1 called Red Federation, other Blue Republic) who fight each other 24/7 in a never ending war. Whilst they are 2 separate corps it is the same community. A lot of people no matter where their main character is in EVE, will put an alt character in RvB because here they can just undock and fight instantly with a group of friends they meet.
If anyone outside of RvB decides they want to declare war on us, we "purple up" and go rofl stomp them. Last year we had 300+ players (on our side) in a massive battle vs another large High-sec corp called Eve University. We won and killed their long standing POS tower (a structure in space with a shield around it which can store ships, items or used as a staging area etc). Playing with these guys helped me to learn the basics and eventually made me a damn awesome player :P I still play with them to this day :)

That sounds pretty epic. Yea I knew it was translated and not literally $300,000.

It kinda reminds me of that huge battle we had back pre lattice when VS was down to only Scarred Mesa Skydock in an alert, which lagged the server tremendously and crashed it. We held it until server crashed. TE throwing all their numbers at us. I know that EVE battle is on a completely different level but for PS2 that battle was pretty epic.

I was making mention of the Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory of Crimea...It was meant to be a joke about Ukraine forgetting to pay the bill and a slam against Russia for making a stupid power play.

As for the actual cost: there was an estimate that actual real-world value (as in "paid for ships and loss thereof") was in the neighborhood of $175,000. That was an estimate though. i have read some sites saying that the original $300,000 was accurate and had already taken into account the in-game cash. Who knows...all I know is that the accountant will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check the little box that says "make future payments?"
