Star Citizen's chatrooms on the website (and im assuming in game when its launched) run using a service called XMPP.
This is really nice because it means unlike other games you dont have to actually launch the game and login to chat with people in game. You can do it from android, windows, linux, mac, iphone, and probably windows phone.

They've made a quick guide on how to connect and some of the more popular clients to connect with

Ive set it up with Pidgin and so far its working great.
One thing ive run into using Pidgin is that when you click "Join a Chat" it seems to default the server to "tester.robertsspaceindustries.com" just change it to "channels.robertsspaceindustries.com" you'll probably have to do that each time you launch pidgin.

Once you're in you can type in the room you want to go to or click "Room List" and it should display all of the rooms you have access to to join, including the NNG room if you're in the organization.
