I don't care for the new metro theme either. I've been testing Windows Server 2012 and the layout is less intuitive. It takes more time to do something than it used to so I'd call that regress not progress. They also applied the tile theme to SharePoint 2013 which really pisses me off. SharePoint is my baby and they fucked up bad. Real bad. Ugh... :wall:

    I have a secret..

I've been running the Consumer Preview as my primary since it came out. I'm not a fan of Metro, but I try to avoid paying for OSes whenever possible, so here I am.

The Metro launcher is a silly idea on MS's part. For all the hate I have for Apple, they got it right. Two OSes, one for touch, one for mouse. IOS and OSX. MS did it backwards, putting the main OS on both tablets and desktops, then the other OS on phones. Its a silly strategy that makes for the awkward use of Windows 8 with a mouse. Fear not though, there will be plenty of solutions, paid and free alike, to rip every trace of it out of the OS and give you a fancy new copy of Windows 7.5.

Metro on a desktop doesn't make sense. I don't understand why they're pushing it. It could be that some of the higher ups are running scared because of the frequent use of the phrase "Post-PC era" in the trades. I don't buy into the "post-pc era." My feeling is that the phones and tables have split the market, increasing it rather than push the PC out. Here's why: Tablets and phones are for CONSUMING content. PCs are for CREATING content and WORKING.

The iPhone and android owe a great debt to Microsoft's Windows Phone (not the current iteration, the first ones; the Windows CE phones). I used to use a PocketPC to program switches and routers without having to lug a laptop around. Very nice.

Haven't messed with server 2012 yet, I need to do that. Sharepoint had such potential from the beginning and while you call it your baby I have to say that's one fucking UGLY baby! It's one of the most fielded MS server products and it's the most kludgiest of the bunch. That's expected given it's lineage. it started out as an internal "tool" at MS with the name "sharepoint team portal" or something. When customers heard about it they asked for the code. That's how it became a product. I haven't seen the 2012 edition but surely you can rip the metro crap out. I mean look at lamborghini.com. you can't even tell that's sharepoint. I had to assess social networking tools for SP and I was impressed with what Newsgator Social Sites added to SP. Good news is that if you know SP you'll be employable for the foreseeable future.

SharePoint 2010 out of the box doesn't look bad. It doesn't look GOOD, but it's not bad. To make it look really good requires a lot of extra development and coding work. SharePoint 2013 looks overly minimalistic and I fucking hate it. It's counter-intuitive. I understand the need for advancement and to push new services and ideas into the market place (they are a business designed to make money), but pushing something prior to a collective understanding in the public behind that push makes no sense.

It's like the Porsche CEO said:

They don't look all that different from the previous year's version and don't offer that much more in terms of options or functionality, but people still buy them.

Microsoft HAD that going, but now they are redesigning for no reason and I'm just not feeling it yet. It would be like Porsche redesigning the 911 and making it look nothing like it previously did and removing all the guts that made it special.
