Steam has DRM, but it wasn't quite done like microsoft's idea. Also PC games go on sale a lot and console digital downloads have only been going on sale the past year or two.
In that respect, PC gaming can be quite affordable and back when I used the xbox live marketplace there were really old games still going for money which I thought was high compared to new retailer prices let alone the used market.
People want gaming to be affordable so they can play, their friends can play and other people can play with or against them.
Console games if they were only sold as new would not be as affordable as PC gaming can be now.
I can tell you with 100% certainty, I would not have played and owned as many console games if I could only buy them new. I'm still a student and it will be a while before I have a job where I could buy all my games new.
Console makers want money, but they can take a long pole and stick it where the sun don't shine if they think they can tell me I can't play games because I'm not rich enough. :P

It's a metaphor when you talk about microsoft's idea of drm, not a simile. The two worlds are not the same, so drm has to be applied in a way which reflects the differences.
Also steam has offline mode which lasts for longer than a day, or an hour if you are not at home.
And gog.com has drm free games.

I believe it effects us negatively. By the time new "next gen" consoles come out PC tech is already caught up if not surpassed. So this means multi-platform titles screw PC gamers over. We're constantly held back by console ports or graphically limited afterthought-renditions of games simply because developers don't want to ship different skus of their game. Shitty, simplistic, couch potato user interface? Blame consoles. Improperly scaled graphics on the PC side? Blame the consoles. Repeat repeat. PC always has been and always will be the ultimate, truly gamer oriented platform. Consoles just made the idea of gaming more casual and more approachable. Hence why my 60 year old father owns a 360, can play Need for Speed and come in first place every race, then go stream Netflix when he's done :D

Don't get me wrong. Consoles have a place in my heart. I've had some seriously life altering moments through brilliant story telling on the console side (MGS, FF7, Resident Evil,), but I think now that the big corporations are running the show, it's a race to become more and more casual to continuously broach untapped markets. Fathers, mothers, infants, everyone. While on the PC side of things, it's still very hardcore. PC gaming I believe, had its watershed moment in 1998 when Half Life came out and the modding scene exploding. I wish it could have continue down that path without being hampered by the big corporate brosefs watering everything down. I'm rambling...

"More studios WILL close and you’ll see more PC and mobile games" - Cliff Blezinsky

Why are more PC games a bad thing? I mean... fuck, didn't this turd buckets company start out making PC titles when they first hit? What a self-righteous bag of dicks.

Cliffy B isn't at epic anymore and is "taking a break" so seeing as he isn't part of the scene he can criticise and say whatever he wants on the internet

Still doesn't address as to why he knocks on PC games... it just doesn't make sense, it really is a good thing as when you develope for PC, the games will actually have a better standard, or at least from what I've seen... makes no sense.

I don't quite think he's knocking it, I think he's saying that as a result of the decision this will lead to PC growth. He doesn't say "This will lead to more PC growth and casual growth and that's a bad thing" He's more saying, simply this result in this, and it's bad for M$ and Sony (more Sony actually). I can guarantee you he will develop for PC and praise it the second he gets back into the game.

I agree with you also that Game companies should always dev on a PC first then move to consoles. When developer target PC's they have to develop for a wide variety of Drivers, GPU's, Processors, and API's resulting in more robust code. IMO, and especially since now both console are build on the PC standard of x86 architecture, It will be much easier to port to console from here on out.

I think Cliffy B may be right, and I expect a PC Renaissance this gen. Which, as we know, is a good thing for us.
