Avenger, in the current stage of the game.

EDIT: Cutlass was my intention to say. Avenger is not.

 

This is going to be a subjective and moving target so bear with a semi-long answer.

First as you said mentioned none of us have seen the final product and all ships and overall game play will be likely subjected to balancing and any number of changes.

There is not one best ship. Depending on the bounty and/or recovery operation it may take a single heavy fighter or a small task force to complete. I personally chose the Drake Cutlass due to its multi-use capabilities, I see it as a space jeep.

Some pro's and cons of the popular choices.

Drake Cutlass:

• Built for boarding operations with no upgrades(pledge package)
• Highly configurable both in upgrade slots and weapon hard points (12 upgrade slots)
• Very maneuverable
• May not be as durable as other ships
• Not the fastest thing in space

Avenger:

• Big honking space gun
• Fast / High thrust to weight ratio (TR5 thruster)
• Can carry cargo and prisoners
• Less maneuverable
• Less configurable (4 upgrade slots)

300 series:

• Balanced in speed & maneuverability
• Moderately configurable (6 upgrade slots)
• Moderate weapon capability
• Pimped out space ride

 

I'd have to put my wager on the Cutlass, for this particular type of activity.

I'm actually debating on getting a Cutlass myself. I already have a Freelancer though, for exploration/mercantile. The Cutlass seems like a really cool ship the more I check up on it. I'm surprised more people don't have one. AllHell is the only person in the ship roster who currently has one.

I could see there being the possibility of re-outfitting this ship as a bomber. Also, now that I'm looking at it; Both the Cutlass and the Caterpillar are made by Drake, both with 12 upgrade options. So I wonder if the Cutlass couldn't also be used as a lighter variant of the Caterpillar.
