To Those with FPS issues

Here are a few tricks to help run the game smoother
#1. If you are running windows 7/xp/vista. Find your planetside2.exe file, right click and hit properties, Goto compatiblity tab, Disable desktop compasition.

#2. Turn down your render quality
#3. Go into your planetside2 directory and find useroptions.ini

Change the following
[Rendering]
GraphicsQuality=1
TextureQuality=0
ShadowQuality=0
RenderDistance=1000
OverallQuality=-1
LightingQuality=0
EffectsQuality=0
TerrainQuality=0
FloraQuality=0
ModelQuality=1

[Terrain]
RenderFlora=Off

This should help your FPS out quite a bit
PS: Editing the .ini file is NOT against the EULA, this method has been approved by the ps2 dev's

 

What does disabling desktop composition accomplish?

 

What I'm doing is starting all graphics on low, then slowly raising key ones during gameplay to keep above 30fps. So far so good. I have been averaging 20fps before doing this and getting like 9fps in large fights. no more of that now.

 

I ctrl+alt+deleted to check out my processor while playing the game and I found that a windows process called "TaskHost.exe" was using TWENTY FIVE PERCENT of my processor all by itself, absolutely choking my processor which is trying to run an already CPU intesive game. In other words, even completely idle, a frigging quarter of my processor was being hogged by this stupid windows process that is apparently quite common on Windows 7 after a certain update.

Imagine a CPU based game being absolutely crippled by losing so much potential processing power. Especially a game that only uses a couple cores primarily (the ones being hogged by a Windows process).

I never noticed this before, as in the past, my processor typically idled between 1% and 3%. "So, why all of a sudden is my computer using this much processor?" I wondered.

Well, I snooped around using a process tracking program called Process Explorer and for whatever reason, it seems Windows is actively watching my computer's performance and watching for crashes and such. Actively. This is useless to me and never even used to run. Well apparently it decided to turn itself on (maybe through an update).

Note: The process called taskhost.exe isn't the issue. It's a required process. The process, however, is responsible for running certain OTHER tasks (hidden tasks), including the task of watching for stability issues. The "watching for stability issues" task is the problem.

I shut that garbage off and needless to say I got a massive FPS boost. Imagine not being able to use 25% of your processor? Honestly, since the game only runs on a couple cores mainly, it's closer to around 50% of my power. Thanks Windows for being retarded.

If this is happening to you (GO CHECK!) please, let me know. I'll post about how I went about shutting it off.

I just want to note what I posted is mututally exclusive from the topic. The topic is one issue. The thing I posted is another one that can either happen or not happen as well. I posted it in here, though, because it's something that boosted my FPS.

 

High priority mode fixed my low FPS issue with out doing any INI edit

 

between ShadowQuality 0, FloraQuality 0, and setting ps2 process to high priority, things are a hell of a lot better

 

I can second that this works. I was in the 20-30 range and now I'm in the 35-50 range.
