Some of my fondest gaming memories are of Arma 2. It's definitely not a pick up and play shooter. You don't just spawn in the action like rambo and take out 5 guys with your recoil-less gun. It takes patience.
They'll iron out 90% of the bugs by launch. That's more than I can say for what BF3 was...
Anyone wanna play it tonight?
I should be around later this evening. I'll hit you up if I can. Don't wait for me though. No promises.
I learned from the meeting not to wait on you...
You're either lying about your fond memories of Arma 2 or you didn't play it anywhere near launch. Arma 2 at launch, and Arma 3 currently, are far away more buggy and infinitely less refined that BF3 was in Beta. Patience is fine, I played hours of Project Reality (itself much less buggy than Arma 2/3, and it JUST hit 1.0 after about 4 years.) but Arma's issues don't have to do with patience in gameplay, they have to due with patience in dealing with flawed, incomplete, and plain half baked game mechanics. For whatever reason, Bohemia are held to a much lower standard when it comes to development than DICE. I don't get this, it doesn't make sense. See Nicole's video for all the evidence you need.
Definitely not lying.
I have about 1200 hours of Arma 2 under my belt. I played the game exclusively for a long time. I don't believe it was anywhere near launch, but even still it was far from a perfect game. I and many others were happy to overlook that to play the game because we had a fucking blast. From assassination missions, to serving as a blackhawk or c130 pilot bringing troops to combat. Or spending 3 hours clearing a town of all enemies. Look at DayZ for example. It's built on the Arma 2 game so immediately it inherits the crummy aiming system, the horrible feel, the bugs, the slow pace, the extreme wide openness, but millions of people love playing it.
I know you didn't have a great experience with Arma and that ultimately crafted the opinion you have now, but it doesn't mean that others haven't enjoyed it. It doesn't mean you have to encourage other's not to play it. The game delivers something special to a lot of people, hence why it continues to receive heaps of attention.
Bohemia Interactive is obviously held to a lower standard than DICE because they are based in the fucking Czech Republic. Certainly not the game development capital of the world bustling with designer and development talent. Because they're not owned and published by EA. And because they're not getting HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars thrown at them to develop a game. Did you know that the marketing campaign alone for Battlefield 3 was 100 million dollars, all infused by EA? BI simply don't have the capital.
If BI had a 100M dollar marketing budget they'd reach a wider audience and perhaps have more money to throw at quality control, but they don't. Don't like it, don't play it.
How many hours of Arma 3 do you have under your belt? All this talk from some of you about how huge its going to be, yet I don't know of anyone who plays it. Certainly no effort has been made to get anyone together in game. Its like you guys spend all this time talking about it on the forums, then go play it, remember that its not that great and stop. Which it should be great, because if anything BI is doing a lot better with money than I think you realize. Czech Republic or not, they're still swimming in government contracts for VBS2, and on top of that they provide high end motion capture services to clients from.
Bottom line is, I don't like it that much, so I probably won't play it, but I don't think anyone else here will either. I'll happily be proven wrong though.
I haven't played that much of it, maybe a few hours, but when my Internet can hold it and I find a good server I always have a blast. I was just in a server and we were having some issues with our vehicles driving like elephants standing on beach balls but we were going from objective to objective slowly but surely clearing it out. Are you sure your issues aren't with the bugs, it is still in development after all, and rather how slow the game is compared to games like battlefield?
Like I said, Troph and I put some serious time into Project Reality. Its not a pacing issue. In my opinion, Bohemia just puts their time into the wrong things. Perfect example: There is a fully working backup camera in the transpo vehicle right next to all of the fully functioning gauges, but you have a press a specific button to vault over an object (which literally just plays an animation, see birgirpal's video). Where are their priorities?
